How to Fit Exercise into Your Busy Day

There is a paradox going on, the busier people get with work, travel, kids and life the more they struggle to find time to work out. Yes, it’s great to be busy and successful, but you can’t afford to not exercise because it is integral to sustained success. I believe it is possible for even the busiest person keep in fit and prioritize their health.

Here are 5 ways to fit exercise into your daily routine—no matter how busy you are!

  1. Make a Schedule and Commit to It

One of the most common excuses (reasons) people use to skip a workout goes something like this: “I am just too busy at work today; I can’t make it to the gym.” Really?!  If you unexpectedly had to pick up your child from school and had no back-up plan, how would you deal with the situation? Cancel a meeting? Take some work home with you?  The truth is, when you really need to, you get out of the office at the time that is necessary. Working out is a priority worth keeping. So make a schedule, write it down and stick to it.

  1. Workout In the Morning: Wake up and lace up! By knocking out your workout before heading to work or running kids around etc. your metabolism will be primed for your day and you are more likely to make healthier food choices than if you use coffee as your wake up habit.
  1. Work Out Efficiently

Pick a workout routine that you can do anywhere. Body weight calisthenics, HIIT sessions or yoga are great options when you’re traveling or getting home from the office late.  If you have an exercise routine that doesn’t require fancy equipment that you can do when you can’t make it to the gym you are more likely to stay consistent.

  1. Track Your Activity Levels

Make a note in your calendar every time you work out, and add up your workout sessions at the end of each week, month, and year so you can monitor your progress and identify areas for improvement. Measuring your activity levels can help you to stay on track and realize when you’re slipping before you’ve completely lost the habit.

  1. Choose Something Over Nothing

You don’t need an hour to get an effective workout done. Squeeze in fitness wherever you are and no matter how much time you have with bodyweight exercises or use a Fitness App with pre-programmed short workouts on your lunch break or at your desk.  Even 20 minutes of some form of exercise is always better than none.
